At least six workers are trapped inside the Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel after its roof collapsed on Saturday in Telangana's Nagarkurnool district.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has reportedly directed the authorities concerned to carry out the rescue operation immediately.

The reports have suggested that the accident was caused due to the slippage of a concrete segment that was used to seal seepage inside the underconstruction tunnel's 14-km inlet.

The Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel runs from Srisailam towards Devarakonda.

The Chief Minister's Office in a statement said, "some people were injured in the incident".

CM Reddy ordered the District Collector, Superintendent of Police and personnel from the fire department and Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) to take up relief measures.

A police officer speaking to PTI stated that the exact number of workers is not known yet but they are assuming there were at least six to eight people.

"The incident occurred when some workers had gone inside as part of the work when roof collapsed at 12-13 km inside the tunnel," the official reportedly said.
